ELM TREASON – DEEP DIVE
The evolution of “WITH YOU”
For those who dig Elm Treason music – really really dig Elm Treason music – we present this “deep dive” into one of our songs, “WITH YOU.”
This song began as a pretty mediocre, uninteresting, off-the-rack kind of rock and roll idea way way back in the day when Andy was still a teenager (very loosely inspired by the Kinks and Billy Squier).
It was an idea that was attempted a few times over the years in demo form but ultimately wound up in the junk drawer of “not so good ideas.”
Years later, when the opportunity came for Elm Treason to offer up a song to be used in a car commercial – with a deadline only three days away – the boys resurrected this song and completely transformed it. It was a crazy weekend on nonstop working and reworking.
Eventually, the song landed the TV spot, got the boys some cash as well as some new instruments.
The song would be further resurrected and revamped once again for the band’s first album “Days of Reaction.”
Here is collection of snippets tracking the song’s evolution over the years.

Oh yes! It’s been a while since I (Andy) heard that song. Thanks for knocking out the cobwebs on that one.
Hymn 43, Jethro Tull
Outstanding, Jaymie!
9 – 5 Dolly Parton
I (Andy) remember watching that film so many times when I was a kid.
I think HBO ran it, practically, around the clock.
That… And close encounters of the third kind!
Lol.
634-5789
Ira was it you that said that Cyndi Lauper was your fave female singer because you heard her ‘Memphis Blues’ album? If so thanky you so much as I love it!!!
I am singing… Beechwood 45789… You can call me up and have a date any old time.
St-One Cold Crazy
Too cool, brother.
The logo for YES is missing. Roger Dean album art is beautiful.
I (Andy) definitely would have included that if the countdown were sourced from Andrew Roman.
One Is The Loneliest Number – growing up my brother played the Three Dog Night album constantly. I grew to hate it back then, but I really do like it. ????♀️
Excellent song. Love the vocal performance.
The album was incredible star to finish you really show your influences 5 stars
Vic, thanks tremendously for sharing your impressions of “Withoit a Tribe.”
Wow.
It’s so good to hear that you enjoyed the album so much.
I (Andy) can’t even begin to thank you.
Really appreciate the support and the positive feedback.
“She’s 19 Years Old” – Eric Steckel
Hi Michael!
Appreciate you commenting here. We love it when people participate. This has been a fun one so far.
I will have to check out that tune.
Three Dog Night’s “One” and Tommy Tutone’s 867-5309.
Both tunes have spots in my playlist.
Thanks so much, man!
“Edge of 17” Stevie Nicks
I (Andy) was hoping someone would pick that one.
Well, I love 79 cents (The Meow Song) by Eilen Jewell but one that hits me is an old song called I was only19 by an Aussie band called Redgum.
Thank you so much, Alan!
Funk Number 49 by The James Gang was the one that came to mind. That was followed by Funk Number 48, also by The James Gang. That was followed by Funk 50 by Joe Walsh. Also, Jenny left her number on the bathroom wall for a good time. I’ll have to check my rolodex for those digits. Iron Maiden sings of the Doomsday Clock in Two Minutes to Midnight.
A lot of people thought of Jenny as a beast. Her number, if I recall, was 666… I (Andy) forget the rest.
12 O’clock Running and Engine Number Nine.
Strangely enough, they both have the names of specific trains too.
Both songs are from an R and B Ska and Skiffle band out of New Jersey.
😀
I’ve heard things. I (Andy) keep wanting to check them out, but I get distracted.
One I Love by Oak Subversion.
I meant One “Eye” Love. My apologies to Mr. Oak.
Oak Subversion LOL
Love the deep dive and the evolution of “With You. It never occurred to me to think “Kinks” but I see the Kinkiness of it now.
I was a young pup back then. Only starting to develop some songwriting skills. It was pretty lame, frankly.
But there was always something about it that I kind of liked. Not sure what it was.
So when that opportunity came along for Bobby and me, and because we were both tapped pretty dry in terms of writing a new song… I broke out my cobweb remover and played it for Bobby.
He thought it was certainly worth a shot.
We gave it string to string resuscitation… And viola!
One Week – BNL; Miami 2017 (I’ve Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway) – Billy Joel; and When I’m 64 — I have one month left till Medicare!
What a difference a few decades makes! With You evolved into a great song!!!
Thanks! I remember we had to record in in literally one weekend to get it out to the car commercial. We were feeling like we could’ve done more with the song but just didn’t have the time. So we revisited it and made it into the song we always wanted it to be.
2112 but of course….
It would’ve been criminal if you didn’t mention this one.
Rush – 2112
Cygnus X-1
Force Ten
Seven Cities of Gold
Metallica – One
Iron Maiden –
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son,
and deserves a mention,
Number of the Beast – 666
Soundgarden – 4th of July
Steely Dan – Hey Nineteen
Tommy Tutone – 8675309/Jenny
Just a few…..????????♂️????
That’s what I’m talking, Vinny!
So many. So much to choose from.
Appreciate it, brother.
1040 Blues By Robert Cray
I (Andy) love me some Robert Cray. Very underrated.
As always drawing a blank and I am late responding so one of my faves is, ‘3 dressed up as a 9’ by Trooper
Thank you much, Shelley!
46 & 2 by Tool
Killer track, Daniel.
Seventeen by Foreigner.
Oh, man! Haven’t listened to that song in ages!
Stellar pick, Eric.
