GROOVY NOODLES
THE ELM TREASON NEWSLETTER NUMBER 76
SEPTEMBER 30, 2022
ELM TREASON TIDBITS
– It’s official! Andy welcomed a new bass guitar into the Elm Treason arsenal! A Fender Precision Bass! White with black trim.
– Time has come at a premium for the boys in the band, but work on the new “WITHOUT A TRIBE” continues… Here’s a sneak preview of some the album’s song titles: “Dealer of Light,” “Typical Way,” “Bring it Out,” “These Words,” “Going Yesterday” and “Lock and Load.” Obviously, this doesn’t give you as much as a hint as to what the music itself sounds like… but we thought you might dig that.
– The band is not consulting an Indian guru nor are we appearing on the cover of any national magazine. We just wanted to clear that up.

Groovy Noodles Extra: From the Pen of Bobby Steel
Are there things that one can get out of an acoustic guitar in the world of rock and roll that cannot be achieved as distinctly with electric guitars.
Hey, we ADORE electric guitars. (Are you kidding?). But in this week’s article, Bobby Steel explains what advantages there are in playing rock and roll acoustically.
Check it out —> HERE <—-

of course Janis, Ann Wilson, Annie Haslam are legends and among my favorites , but I thought I’d list my favorites of more recent female vocalists that I think kick-ass and can rock the paint off the walls.
Taylor Momsen (Pretty Reckless)
Lizzy Hale (Halestorm)
Floor Jansen (Night wish) one of the purest voices I’ve ever heard. Gorgeous.
Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and I recently eared Jinjer, what an incredible voice !
Ho, and Amy Winehouse.
Martin, so good to hear from you.
I’m not familiar with Jinjer. Any favorite songs of hers you would recommend?
Karen Carpenter, Celine Dion, and a beginning talent I’ve had the pleasure to work with, Teda 🙂
https://youtube.com/c/TedaMusic
Got any links to any of Teda’s work?
Joyce Kennedy from Mother’s Finest
Ann Wilson
Linda Ronstadt
Hi Bill!
I (Andy) had just finished saying to Michael that I was utterly surprised at the lack of love for Linda Ronstadt in this thread. (maybe, that’s too harsh. I did ask for only three voices per person)… but there you are, bringing her into the mix.
Love the relative obscurity (compared to the other two) of Joyce Kennedy. Killer.
Bonnie Raitt, Ally Handall, Janis Joplin
Not familiar with Ally Handall.. Got any links?
Of course, your other two are exquisite!
Carol King, Debbie Harry, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt
Hi Michael!
Lovin’ your selections.
I (Andy) have to say I’m a tad surprised that no one else (to this point) has mention Linda Ronstadt… that is, until now.
Karen Carpenter, Ann Wilson, Cher
Good call, Chuck!
I (Andy) admit… I was wondering if anyone would bring in Cher and Karen. They are certainly among the most iconic!
Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt…
There you go, Shelley!
I (Andy) was hoping someone would bring Ella into the mix.
Thanks for the extra segment, Bobby. I’ve said your sound contains the most articulate(If you will) recordings I’ve every heard. I guess using acoustic guitars is a big reason why.
thanks. I think I got more articulate because I had no choice LOL Acoustic guitar can be very unforgiving. Glad you liked the mini article.
Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar
Three powerhouses right there. And today is the sad anniversary of Janis’ passing. I (Andy) always imagine the music that was left uncreated.
Stevie Nicks (of course!)
Lizzy Hale
Janis Joplin
Hi Lisa1
NICE to see Halestorm represented here! Wonderful pick. All three are good, of course…but I always love that slightly off-the-beaten path selection!
Rock on!
K.D. Lang, Judy Garland, Patsy Cline
Hey Cindy!
A marvelous span of vocalists there. LOVE me some Patsy and Judy in particular.
I’m with you Bobby on Annie Haslam ..also check out Margarita Monet from the Edge of Paradise and Susan Tedeschi
I thought MM was fascinating. How she whisper-sings then belts it out. She’s got a lotta control.
That is a hard one to pick because I have so many that I love and listen too every day from so many genres’ Bluegrass Abigail Washburn, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle. Blues Janiva Magness, Maria Muldaur, knocks your socks off voices Ann Wilson, Grace Potter, Imelda May. Most beautiful voices Katie Noonon, Mia Washinton and Emmylou Harris best singer songwriters Amy Speace, Eliza Gilkyson and the amazing Gretchen Peters and I just can’t leave them out Allison Russell Eddi Reader Eilen Jewell, Lucinda Williams sorry I couldn’t just pick three and I could go on, but I’ve given me self a slap up the back of the head and said stop it..
You gotta go with what you feel. Whatever the vibe, no matter how many… this is a serious muster of outstanding talent… and there will ALWAYS be more. ALWAYS.
As I said in another part of this thread, for me, it’s really about the mood and moment. Sometimes, Aretha is perfect… other times Billie needs my attention….Just yesterday, Etta hit the spot for about two hours.
That’s the beauty of music. there’s so much… Each nano-second is perfectly covered by some vibe.
Etta James, Lita Ford and Patsy Cline. ………. I could go on and on…. But I won’t. ????…????
Lisa, I (Andy) am SOOOOO digging that range right there. From Etta to Lisa… (Actually, that sounds like it could be a book title)..
Just too many to pick only three, personally I would start with Bonnie Raitt, for sure the Wilson girl from heart, I like Fiona Apple’s voice a lot Joan Osborne Lita Ford I’m telling you man too many to name a lot of beautiful female voices in the country genre as well, I love listening to a woman saying a woman that has such a range of voice with natural harmonics and know how to use them wow good question guys
You’re right, David. There’s always too many to choose. But it’s a fun exercise.
The thing is… for me anyway … I don’t really have “favorites” of most things. It’s more a matter of what I’m in the mood for today. 🙂
I know you only want 3, but I’m giving you 3 x 3 ladies….
1) Tracy Chapman, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross.
2) Billie Holiday, Alicia Keys, Janis Joplin.
3) Nina Simone, Etta James, Ellie Goulding.
Only one modern day singer.
You really didn’t expect me to stick to the rules, did you? 🙂
We would have been disappointed if you DID stick the rules, Penny.
😉
Delicious vocal dynamos.
Aretha Franklin, Stevie Nicks and Barbra Streisand.
That’s three quarters of the female vocalists Mount Rushmore right there. 🙂
Thanks, Katie!
My three favorite female vocalists are: Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, and Melody Christea.
Hi Sam!
I (Andy) dig your trio there… especially the Melody Christea. Not familiar with her work. But will check it out.
Always appreciate hearing from you!
Bill Boys, I had the honor of touring with Mother’s Finest in the late 70’s and Joyce Kennedy was and still is one of the strongest lead vocalist ever. Also love Ann Wilson and Linda Ronstadt.
Also, have to mention Grace Potter.
Favz = Big Mama Thorton -Janis Joplin – Irma Thomas-> [local talent] SAMPLE if you are interested=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXPlec9jXZw
GOING TO CHEAT AND LIST 3 MORE
Ella Fitzgerald
Etta James
Mary Hopkin {thanks Apple Records for letting me hear her}
unusual voice styling -very lyrical
I (Andy) remember listening to “Those Were the Days” as a little kid. I have always loved the song… but I remember asking my grandma, “Does someone else sing this one? I don’t like how she sings.”
LOL.
Ooh – Ooh – almost forgot —Ma Rainey {black bottom MaMa}
