THE ELM TREASON NEWSLETTER NUMBER 58
MAY 27, 2022
This Memorial day weekend, the boys in the band remember those who have given their lives so that we might do what we do in freedom. You are not forgotten. You are forever honored.
ELM TREASON NEWS
So, for all of you ELM TREASON music fans, we could really use your input on something.
Here goes!
As you may or may not know, we have been saying for several weeks now that our next album (due out in the early Fall) will be called “GOING YESTERDAY.”
We have explained here (and in our newsletter), why we were going with this title. Along with thematic reasons, “GOING YESTERDAY” is also the title of one of the album’s tracks.
You probably also know that we have launched an album cover artwork contest for the “GOING YESTERDAY” record.
However, being artists – ever fickle, ever dissatisfied, ever-questioning, sometimes annoying – over the past several days, we have been discussing, at length, the possibility of a different title that seems – on closer inspection – to be more representative of the overall arching theme of many of the tunes.
(And as with “GOING YESTERDAY,” there is a song on the album with the new title we are contemplating).
The title we’ve now been tossing around is “UP TO ME.”
We still love the title “GOING YESTERDAY,” and it still may very well be what we go with. Like we said, we have an album cover contest ongoing based on that title underway.
But “UP TO ME” really seems to be a better fit in some ways.
“GOING YESTERDAY” was alluding to that desire we all have now and again to check out and temporarily revert back to an easier time. As someone might say, “I’m GOIN’ FISHIN” … or “I’m GOING ROGUE,” we were saying, “We’re GOIN’ YESTERDAY !”
This new title idea, “UP TO ME,” touches on something more personal and more empowering – as if to say, “I can’t keep complaining about things and relying on phonies to tell me what’s up and how to think. I need to do my due diligence. I have to rely on me. It’s “up to me.”
This is a theme that also seems to permeate the album in different ways.
So, we ask you – even those who may have already started working on your album cover contest entries (which we will STILL accept, of course) – which title do you dig better?
“GOING YESTERDAY“?
“UP TO ME“?
We’ve also posed this question to the people in our private FACEBOOK group.
And if we do change the title, we will extend the album cover contest to allow those who have started something to have enough time to start over or make adjustments.
We really want you to be a part of the album’s creation process, so please hit that comments section and help us out! THANK YOU!
Fun Input: Best Band Name?
So, rather than just a band popularity contest (pretty boring), how about this….
What band name – whether you dig the band or not – is the best? The coolest? The most clever?
For instance… we’ve had people tell us they don’t care for our music, but love our band name. (We’d rather have it the other way around, of course…)
We may not be Dead Heads, but we agree that the NAME “Grateful Dead” is just sensational.
What do you think? (And please… limit yourself to your favorite two or three examples at most).
Have at it! Hit that comments section… and thank you!

Toad the Wet Sprocket
The the
YES! One of my (Andy’s) favorites… ever. Good call, Bill.
LOVE Toad the Wet Sprocket! Just a great great name… so odd, so unique.. and yet it is so fluid, not clunky at all!
I like the name dead Kennedy’s, also big Head Todd and the monsters, David Letterman said that guy’s got a really huge head ????????????
Yeah, DEAD KENNEDYS is just so edgy, so clever, a little dangerous… I (Andy) have always been enamored with that name.
But BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS??? We need T-SHIRTS!
Forgot to mention, you guys come up with some really funny things, I appreciate that, laughter and music, good medicine boys
David, it does our hearts a ton of good to hear that.
MOST SINCERELY.
Hey, any time we can maybe a bring a smile – or even a smirk – to someone’s face, whether it be a meme, a tune or whatever, it’s a VERY VERY GOOD DAY!
We love havin’ you out there, man.
AC/DC
It’s a perfect fit isn’t it?
You don’t think “finger picking folk music” with the name AC/DC. It’s not only cool, it pretty much sums up the vibe!
Well, Bill Boys beat me. I have always thought Toad the Wet Sprocket was the coolest band name. Now I have to come up with another… How about Sopwith Camel.
Came up with a great runner up, though.
hey… if TOAD THE WET SPROCKET is your pick, let’s go with it.
Indeed, it is a GREAT NAME… No denying that, Katie.
But SOPWITH CAMEL??? Pretty damn cool.
Although I don’t care much for their music, I think “Five Finger Death Punch” is an awesome name for a band.
As far as the new album name goes, when you posted it on the private page, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. After some thought, and a few glasses of Bulliett bourbon, I think I like “Up to Me”. The phrase, “If it was up to me” was, at one point, something I would say to my plumbing customers, a lot.????
I (Andy) agree with you completely, Mike. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the music of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. I would never begrudge someone if they’re huge fans of the band… but as far as names go, it is STELLAR.
Thanks a million for the input on the new album name. While both titles are, in effect, ultimately meant to lead to the same place along life’s ever-twisting highway, the initial impression that the phrase “Up to Me” conjures up may be closer to the effect we are hoping for. It doesn’t require a ton of explanation…. Whereas, “Going yesterday” might give the impression (to some) that we’re talking about escaping from “the now” – almost retreating… and that isn’t the case.
but… we haven’t decided yet.
REALLY appreciate your input, Michael.
Led Zeppelin and Guns and roses
Hi Barb! Hope you are well.
yes, GREAT names… the story of Led Zeppelin’s name origin is the stuff of rock n roll legend!
be well. Stay well!
I don’t know why, but I always loved Death Cab for Cutie.
Same here, Laura! GREAT GREAT name.
Iggy and the Stooges, Black Sabbath, Yes, Mothers of Invention.
Yes… KILLER trio of rock and roll nomenclature..
Black Sabbath, perhaps dulled by so much exposure, is literally one of the greatest band names I (Andy) have ever heard. I dig all three, yes – particularly IGGY POP THE STOOGES – but BLACK SABBATH is exquisite.
Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (Art students for you)
Iron Maiden tribute band called 667 The Neighbour of the Beast
Wet Leg – Indie band from the Isle of Wight
Hey, Phil.
There is certain LILT in the name Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.. It flows. I (Andy) have always LOVED that band name.
Now, I will completely honest…. WET LEG is OUTSTANDING. LOL.
Love it.
So so many…..
Elm Treason !!
Elm who??
Hmmm…
Will have to look them up….
😉
Toad the Wet Sprocket; Frigid Pink My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult; Flogging Miolly
Hey, Shelley… I (Andy) love the SOUND of all these names… They all have that quirky roll off the tongue thing, if you get what I mean… My favorite of lot? TOAD THE WET SPROCKET.
Eagles of Death Metal and Salty Dog plus maybe The Wailing jennys…
Hey, Ellen! Hope you are well.
All great picks, I (Andy) think… SALTY DOG may be my favorite of the three.
Too many to pick but it’s got to come down to at least The Beatles.
love your letter by the way
I (Andy) think a lot of people don’t really get how clever the name BEATLES really is. One of the best ever, in my humblest opinion.
So PLEASED that you dig the newsletter. Thank you for checking us out every week. We’re honored to have you out there, brother.
I’ve always thought Koffin Kats and Mad Sin were clever names.
Oooh, YES! VERY COOL, actually,,, incredibly clever. Have to agree. Especially Koffin Kats!
Appreciate it much, Lisa!
The Doors, The Grateful Dead and the Dead Kennedys
Yeah, GRATEFUL DEAD is just a great name… period…
But DEAD KENNEDYS is also VERY GOOD. Edgy.
I like the name DOORS as well… but but of your “DEAD” choices – for me – are among my (Andy’s) favorites… ever!
I like the names “Iron Maiden” (as well as the band) and “Slipknot.”
Gotta agree with you, David. I (Andy) have always loved the name IRON MAIDEN. Absolutely.
Slipknot is cool, too..
Thanks, man!
So does this album cover need to be done on a computer or can it be free hand?
Loving the news letters.
Hi Shirley! It can be done any way that works for you best! We’d love for you to participate. 🙂
It would be marvelous to have you submit an entry! 🙂
Updated rules will be posted in the June 10th newsletter!
