ROMAN AROUND
From the pen of Andy Roman….
This week, Andy writes about the time a radio programmer was a little less than kind to the band.

I’m gonna go with, of course, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Aerosmith,Janis Joplin,Oasis,Elvis, to name a few for now!!
I (Andy) dig all of them, brother. And sadly, I have heard all these artists get SLAMMED by others, too.
“I can’t stand (fill in artist)’s voice.”
“The music is boring.”
“Way overplayed..”
Blah, blah, blah…
Whatever..
I dig your picks, Joe.
Your story on Stairway to Heaven? Back in the 90s a rock station had been bought out and was changing format, REM “the end of the world as we know it” replayed Friday to Monday. I tuned in multiple times
I (Andy) have to admit… I really like that idea of playing a song over and over as a promotion. That doesn’t mean I’ll be tuning in 24/7 until the actual format kicks in, but I could see myself letting the song play three or five times. 🙂
Why not?
I think it’s clever.
Many people dislike Steely Dan. I think they are a flawless groove every time. Also, I love Sciattica! They are the nerve center of metal and I can feel them in my bones the same way I experience Spinal Tap. Delighted to hear you’re on Spotify. This could be a really big deal. Very happy for you guys.
Hi Bill! I (Andy) actually love Steely Dan, too… but I have come across a LOT of people who just don’t dig them. No big deal, of course… but their ironic, witty lyrics and terrific chord progression while still maintain accessible melodies has always impressed me.
This page goes to 11!
I am always baffled when people say they don’t like the Beatles, that’s when I start my lecture of how Important they are in history. My jaw drops too when folks dis ac/dc . I just don’t get it!
April, you and me (Andy) both.
Yes, my arguments become emotional because I so deeply connect with the band… but itt does not compute with me.
Of course, I’ve had people look at me as if I just crushed the skull of an innocent puppy with a sledgehammer for not liking their music…
But yes…. I am SO with you, April.
Bon Scott, Chris Cornell, Tina Turner, Brian Setzer, Jeff Lynne, Johnny Cash, Joan Jett, Larkin Poe, Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown, Def Leppard, Laura Cox, Beth Hart, Radiohead, SRV, DLR, Faith No More, Kate Bush …
That’s all, Phil?
😉
Outstanding muster of supreme talent, brother.
Oh who can i mention, the band YES, Allman bros, Zucchero, Eno so many non main stream, Alan Parsons project too many to mention.
Rock on guys x
It’s amazing… I (Andy) will listen to something that really moves me or really hits home (which is a LOT, I grant you), and I literally ask the universe, “How is it possible that people cannot like this?”
Yet, like a couple of others have said…. As long as people are connecting with SOMETHING, it’s all good. My bewilderment commences when I find that people have NO connection to music at all. But then again, I am perpetually bewildered, so don’t go by me.
Well I am more baffled in that there are some people who just don’t get or like any sort of music, I don’t worry to much about what people like or not we all have different taste in what ever music that floats our boat and gets us grooving and a moving…Each to their own…
LOVE what you have to say, Ellen. I (Andy) would have to agree that I am more puzzled that there are actually people who simply don’t connect with ANY music of ANY sort. I literally cannot comprehend how that is possible… but it is. I’ve seen it firsthand.. I have seen people who USED to be into music but have lost interest and don’t listen to anything anymore. To me (at the risk of being over-dramatic), that’s a kind of death of the soul….. Music is MY constant. My connection to it has only grown stronger… So, yes, I’m with you there.
Georgia Satellite’s;
Probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a concert. Every band member sang at least 1 song, with Todd Johnston (Drums) doing the old classic “White Lightning”.
Check out “Battleship Chains”, “Mon Cheri”, “Don’t pass me by” and “Railroad Steel” for a taste.
Three Dog Night;
In my opinion, just about the most underrated band of the early 70’s with 21 songs making billboards top 40 by 1975.
“Shambala”, “Family of Man”, “Black and White” and “Old Fashioned Love Song” to name a few.
And Floyd Sneed (drums) was my inspiration to learn the drums.
RUSH;
Philosophy Rock
2 songs, same album, 2112
“Something for Nothing”
And
“Tears”
Nothing you can dance too. Just 3 guys making incredible music with deep thoughts; “Bravado”, Roll the Bones” “Time Stand Still” and (side A) of 2112.i
John, the diversity (for the want of a better word) in your choices is sensational. Truly. You’re a man after my (Andy’s) own heart. Different styles. Different vibes. Different approaches… and yet, it all moves us. It all connects. GREAT comment, brother.
This is a tough question for me. I like music, all styles and types. There are songs I don’t care for, some songs that have been over-played so much you feel like you’ll puke the next time you hear it, but generally I like it all. When the music is good or when you can relate to it in some fashion, it gets to you. I guess it’s an individual thing. we are all different yet united by certain songs. I feel like I’m diving into the well to deep, so I’ll stop here. Rock on!
There is NO WELL too deep here, Paul. (Well, almost none….) I (Andy) dig your answer. I think you’ve representrd MANY people’s thoughts with your response. Outstanding, brother.
